The Icon Mosque in Dubai was designed to question the mosques traditional composition with an attempt at reinterpreting the canonical principles of mosque design.
Designed as a 12 mechanical palm trees that house all the services in the building and open and close periodically depending on the time of the day, our mosque is a simple open prayer space under a big
mechanical roof that moves up and down to allow for fresh air to enter the building.
This roof is designed to allow for outdoor prayers for 4000 people who pray under the mechanical canopies in the hot summer months in Dubai.
Alongside this edifice is a pedestrian bridge like the high-line in New York, which allows the impatient pedestrian to experience the mosque without desecrating its sacredness.
